He said the only way Liberians can succeed in kicking Ebola out of their country is to unite forces in the fight against the virus and not by stirring divisions among the people, noting that the disease has no borders.
According to the Liberia News Agency, Dr. Sirleaf made the assertion Wednesday, when he addressed a special press conference held at the Information Ministry on Capitol Hill in Monrovia.
Dr. Sirleaf, who is son of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, reiterated calls for all citizens and foreign residents to adhere to preventive measures as well as report anyone showing symptoms of the virus, noting, “By so doing, you will be saving yourself and many others.”
He appealed to the Liberian media, especially the private media, to refrain from perceptive reporting in this critical period in the country's history, stressing that “it is about time that the media put behind them differences and report in the interest of the nation.”
Dr. Sirleaf said while it is true that the international community was helping Liberia to overcome its nightmare, Liberians must take the lead in helping themselves to prevent further spread of the epidemic.
Dr. Sirleaf said he has been involved in several processes leading to the eradication of the virus from Liberia, adding, “This is the only country that we as Liberians have, therefore we must do all to protect it.”
