Minister Nyenswah said it was therefore unfortunate for health workers to refuse to treat suspected patients at the Ebola quarantine centers when their allowances for August are in the works.

Speaking Tuesday in a telephone interview on the Truth breakfast Show, he indicated that health workers have already received their regular pay for the month of August from the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.

He stressed that the hazard allowance for Ebola is for health workers who volunteer to work at thequarantine centers in ELWA and JFK, and not their regular pay as government workers.

Minister Nyenswah disclosed that under the Ebola hazard allowance, medical doctors are expected to receive US$1,666 as gross and US$1,500 as net allowance, while nurses would receive US$833 as gross and US$750 as net.

This was agreed upon by health workers from the two quarantine centers last Friday in a meeting with health authorities, he said.

“For health workers to say on September 1 that they have not received pay so they cannot attend to suspected Ebola patients is worrisome,” he said, noting, “This is the time for Liberians to know that we should sacrifice to fight Ebola, rather than be demanding so much from government.”
