“Stopping this disease won't be easy, but we know how to do it. You are not alone, together we can treat those who are sick with respect and dignity and we can save lives,” President Obama asserted.
President Obama’s statement was contained in a video released by the White House on Tuesday.
Obama pointed out that the United States and the countries affected by the Ebola outbreak can work together to improve public health so that such outbreak doesn't happen again.
He stressed that in this urgent work and in building a stronger and more prosperous Africa, affected countries Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone Nigeria and all other African countries can count on him and the United States as a partners.
He called on citizens of Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria to know the facts about the disease, as it is the first step in combating the spread of the Ebola virus.
Obama noted that Ebola is not spread through the air like flu or through casual contact with people except they show symptoms of the disease such as fever and malaria.
According to Obama, the disease is spread by touching the body fluids such as sweat, saliva or blood of someone who is sick or has died from it or through a contaminated item like a needle.
He warned health practitioners and families to avoid caring for patients at home and touching Ebola victims during burials, adding that it is the most common means by which the disease is spread.
President Obama urged health care workers to wear protective clothing like gloves and masks, and admonished people to report to hospitals to receive prompt treatment as half of the patients can recover if they seek early treatment.
