BUCHANNAN, March 10 (LINA) - Gender Minister Julia Duncan-Cassell has called on Liberian women to remain engaged with their male counterparts in every sphere of society as the nation goes to presidential and general elections in  2017.

According to the Gender Minister, women’s strength in leadership “should not be underestimated by anybody” because their role in maintaining and contributing to the peace and stability is cardinal, especially as UNMIL is drawing down its presence in Liberia.

Cassell made the call Tuesday during the celebration of International Women’s Day in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.
She hailed President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for the “excellent leadership she has exhibited since her ascendency to power in 2005.”

She noted that Liberia has produced women leaders, and will continue to do so, as evidenced by the fact that the country is making significant gains in its fight to ensure gender equality, adding that “women must be encouraged to partake in the governance aspect of the state.”

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 ever year to, among other things, recognize women for their social, political and economic achievements as well as their contributions to the growth and development of society, she indicated.
