MONROVIA, January 11 (LINA) - The President Pro-Tempore of the Senate, Armah Zolu Jallah, has called on members of the 53rd National Legislature to review forestry policies enacted by that body.
Pro-Tempore Jallah said policies enacted by the Legislature have “seriously undermined” the performance of the forestry sector, especially in the area of logging.
Speaking at the official opening of the 5th Session of the 53rdNational Legislature in the Senate Chamber at the Capitol Building in Monrovia Monday, the Gbarpolu County lawmaker said it was important to review these policies in order to help logging companies perform better.
“Unlike in the past when the forestry sector helped us construct and improve roads in rural communities and provided employment opportunities for rural dwellers, policies we have put in place have weakened such opportunities,” the Pro-Tempore noted.
Meanwhile, Jallah is calling on the Executive branch to present a regular assessment report to the Liberian people on the status of the economy, concessions ratified as well as the status of financing agreements signed between it and bilateral and multilateral bodies.
He stressed the need for the Executive, in the next fiscal year, to begin to also present a regular report on the status of the health sector, including the number of clinics and health centers as well as its resource commitment to each of these sectors, among others.
