The workshop held recently alerted students to the reality, signs and how climate change can be prevented in the country.

According to an Agriculture Ministry official, the clubs, when established, will help increase the level of awareness on climate change in Liberian schools.

Speaking earlier, Assistant Agriculture Minister for Technical Services, Chea B. Garley, emphasized the need for the youth population to be agents of change by helping the ministry create awareness on climate change.

In remarks, the Administrative Assistant to Bong County Superintendent, Joseph M. Urey, called for a moratorium on the use of wetlands for the construction of residences.

He said unless the needed precautionary measures are taken, the situation could lead to future disaster, as the evidence of climate change is already visible.

“Unlike the past, our country no longer has a regular farming season, a situation that is seriously hampering annual yields,” he added

In his presentation of a brief background of the workshop, Bong County Development Officer T. Calvin Kollie said: “the world climate has become irregular as the global temperature continues to rise, leading to the unanticipated level of rainfall.”

According to him, the Climate Change Adaptation Agriculture Project (CCAAP) is aimed at enhancing resilience and reducing the vulnerability of poor farming communities to the adverse impacts of climate change.

CCAAP recognizes strong demand for knowledge, information and skills revolving around climate change in land production systems.

It realizes further that climate change poses real threats to local livelihoods, current development models and the future economic growth of the country.

In order to address these abnormalities, the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and CCAAP have developed the capacity of key stakeholders to plan for and manage climate change, support knowledge sharing, awareness and communication on managing climate change risks as well as developing leadership capacity for advocacy and the establishment of a network for climate change practitioners.
