MONROVIA, January 29 (LINA) -The Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy (LME) has constituted committees to monitor mining sites in the country in a bid to fight illicit mining.

Assistant LME Minister Samuel Summerville disclosed that the committees will be assigned to mining sites in Liberia to discourage the practice of people engaging in illegal mining.

According to the Liberia News Agency, Minister Summerville made the assertion Wednesday when he spoke in an interview with reporters in Monrovia.

He said illicit mining was among major challenges the ministry faced in 2014, adding: “It has undermined the ministry’s smooth operations.”

Summerville added that the ministry in 2014 also conducted monitoring on the Aureus Mining, geological services and oil exploration companies to encourage them to make contributions towards its internal house clearing exercise.
