Minister Sannoh said the security reform agenda is intended to promote good governance within the security sector to ensure professional standard of operation which is on par with international standards.
He observed that the reform of security agencies has been a critical component for peace and state-building in post-conflict Liberia and that the BIN is no exception to maintaining professional standard in their performance.
The Justice Minister made the statement Friday at the start of a two-day Self-Assessment and Agenda Setting Retreat for officers of the BIN organized by the Ministry of Justice at the Bentol Administrative Building in Bensonville City, Montserrado County.
He noted that self-assessment in any security entity must also take into consideration the promotion of good governance, respect for the rule of law, protection of human rights and transparency and accountability, which are vital for the well-being of any institution.
Sannoh stressed that BIN officers should maintain integrity because the institution deals with several key issues such as naturalization and cross-border crimes, including human trafficking and goods smuggling across borders in the sub-region.
For his part, BIN Commissioner Lemuel Reeves admonished officers of the entity to be honest and examine the gaps and challenges facing the bureau to enable it provide professional services to the State and the Liberian people.
Commissioner Reeves maintained that if BIN should move forward, officers of the agency should use the retreat to examine the challenges confronting the institution and make recommendations aimed at addressing the issues.
Reeves pointed out that officers of BIN have a crucial role to play in the transformation of the security sector in Liberia and the issues of accountability and transparency should be the hallmark of every officer.
