Speaking at the 99th observance of National Decoration Day held at the Presbyterian Church in Monrovia Wednesday, the Bishop of the Don Stewart Christ Pentecostal Church, Bishop Torgbor E. Dixon, said to honor the dead is good, but reminded Liberians not to forget about those who are alive but cannot afford a decent living in the society.
He explained that on Decoration Day, Liberians decorate the graves of their dead relatives because the dead cannot afford to clean their places, the same way some Liberians who cannot afford to cater to their needs should be helped by others and not Government alone.
Bishop Dixon stressed that Liberians should change their attitude toward each other to develop the country and its people, noting that it will take the collective efforts of every Liberian to transform the nation.
Meanwhile, the Assistant Minister for Student Services at the Ministry of Education, T. Wilson Gaye, has urged Liberians to begin to set good examples in whatever position they serve as public servants.
Minister Gaye stressed that if Liberia should move ahead in its development drive, it will depend on the good example exhibited by those in authority for the next generation to emulate.
The National Decoration Day program was organized by the Ministry of Education in memory of past national leaders.
As part of the program, wreaths were laid on the graves of Presidents Joseph Jenkins Roberts, Daniel B. Warner, William V. S. Tubman and William R. Tolbert at their respective grave sites in Monrovia.
