MONROVIA, March 13 (LINA)  - Acting Information Minister Isaac Jackson has called on students attending Catholic schools to abandon their strike action as government is exerting efforts to resolve the salary issue between their teachers and the Catholic Education Secretariat.

Minister Jackson’s statement comes in the wake of a mass demonstration carried out by students of the Catholic School System through the principal streets of Monrovia on Friday, demanding their right to be in the classroom.

He made the comment at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing in Monrovia on Friday.

Jackson noted that there were several pressing issues that have been resolved over the years through dialogue and that the current situation unfolding within the Catholic School System is no exception.

He assured that the government is doing all it can to amicably resolve the problem.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information official has called on the teachers to also abandon their stay-home strike action in the interest of the students and to save the image of the country’s school system.

He pointed out that the students have been out of school for a very long period due to the Ebola outbreak, a situation that was a setback to their educational pursuit and they cannot be denied education now that normal schooling has resumed.

In recent times, Catholic schools teachers have abandoned the classroom in demand of five months salary arrears allegedly owed them by the Catholic Education Secretariat.
