(LINA) -The National Elections Commission (NEC) has released the provisional list of 10 candidates who have applied to contest the Rivercess County Electoral District # 2 Representative By-Election.
The NEC listing released recently following the nomination of candidates desirous of contesting for the seat.
A NEC press release issued in Monrovia Wednesday said nine political parties are fielding candidates, while one person is an independent candidate.
Parties in the race are the ruling Unity Party, Congress for Democratic Change, Alternative National Congress, National Patriotic Party, and Union of Liberian Democrats.
Others are Liberty Party, National Democratic Coalition, People’s Unification Party and the Movement for Progressive Change.
The provisional list shows that there are nine male and one female proposed candidates.
The release said NEC has already begun evaluating the list of candidates to ensure that only those who meet the legal requirements are allowed to contest the by-election.
In line with the key dates for the Rivercess County Representative by-election, the final list of qualified candidates will be released on March 25, while campaign will run from March 25 to April 19.
The poll is being conducted in accordance with Article 37 of the Constitution of Liberia, which calls for a by-election “in the event of a vacancy in the Legislature created by death, resignation, and expulsion or otherwise."
A vacancy was created when Representative Francis Paye was elected to the Senate in the December 20, 2014 mid-term election.
