(LINA) – Two officials of the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have called on Liberian students to continue taking precautionary measures against the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
The two who made the call are UNICEF Country Representative Sheldon Yett and Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom, who was in Liberia to ascertain the facts about the impact of the virus and actions taken to contain it.
Yett and Bloom were speaking when the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the International Quizzing Association (IQA) officially opened a day-long quizzing tournament under the auspices of UNICEF in Paynesville outside Monrovia recently.
They recognized the courage, resilience and ingenuity of local communities and student groups which aided the drop in new infections, but said there was a “stronger need for continuity in the struggle.”
The two officials told the students that their educational sojourn has been backed by the good leadership roles they played during the height of the Ebola crisis.
Meanwhile, the Coordinator of the MYS National Youth Service Program (NYSP), Daniel Maxwell, has advised students to see their efforts in whatever they do as key to the growth and development of the country.
For his part, the Representative of the IQA in Liberia, Atty. Phil Dixon, urged the students to see national volunteers as heroes.
He then lauded the efforts of UNICEF, the Youth Ministry and students to bring back the spirit of excellence and competitive education in the country.
