Liberia has began another countdown of two incubation periods amounting to 42 days to be declared an Ebola-free nation two days after the death and burial of the last confirmed Ebola patient in the country.

Assistant Health Minister Tolbert Nyenswah said if none of the contacts generated from the recent infection is proven positive of the virus, the nation will be declared an Ebola-free nation upon completion of the 42-day incubation periods.

He made the disclosure at the Ministry of Information daily Ebola press conference held at the Ministry in Monrovia on Monday.

Liberia’s previous quest of becoming an Ebola-free nation was thwarted by the emergence of a new case March 20 after the country made a journey of over 27 days into the countdown period.

The country now has a total of 185 contacts under the Incident Management System (IMS) surveillance, while the death of the last confirmed patient means that there is no confirmed Ebola patient in Liberia.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), a nation can begin countdown to becoming an Ebola-free nation after the second negative test of the last surviving Ebola patient or a day after the burial of the last recorded patient in the country.
