President Sirleaf said the celebration of Easter should remind Liberians that the grave is not the end of man, but an indication that believers will live again.
Delivering her Easter message to the nation in Monrovia Friday, the Liberian leader also reminded her countrymen that rendering service to humanity, the afflicted and the poor is the cornerstone of Christianity.
She added that such principle is also the abiding foundation upon which Liberia evolved historically, adding that “Today those values remain the principles upon which we continue to rebuild from strength to strength.”
Easter is a festival and holiday of Christian origin celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It is described in the New Testament as having occurred three days after the crucifixion of Jesus by Roman soldiers at Calvary.
Easter is the culmination of the Passion of Christ, preceded by a forty-day period of fasting, praying and repentance of sins.
The week before Easter is called the Holy week, which is marked by the commemoration of the Last Supper and its preceding foot-washing rite as well as Good Friday, which commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus.
