(LINA) - The Association of Liberian Universities (ALU) and the National Commission on Higher Learning (NCHL) have called for the setting up of a National Commission on Accreditation.

The call was made Wednesday by ALU president Dr. Emmitt Dennis in his presentation at a one-day dialogue on Liberia reaching the middle income country goal by 2030 on behalf of the two institutions.

In his address at the forum organized by the Governance Commission (GC), Dennis said when created the commission will re-accredit and accredit present and future universities.

He added that as a regulatory body it will require quality assurance from all universities accredited and operating in the country.

He said as part of the commission’s requirement for quality control, it will assign quality code with an added requirement for substantial investment in infrastructure as well as quality of faculty profile.

President of the state-owned University of Liberia, Dr. Dennis wants a temporary moratorium placed on the establishment of new institutions of higher learning.

He spoke on the theme “Restructuring higher education to address regulatory and accreditation needs of Liberia.”

Dr. Dennis said: “If we must meet the requirements of a middle income country, we need to ensure quality control as our country’s growth depends on the quality of the workforce to meet the technological demands of current realities.”

Commenting on gender disparity in the education sector, Dennis said females account for 35 percent of all students at the state-run University of Liberia, while 36 percent of all enrolled in 2013 and 2014 were in the science and technology and agriculture departments.
