MONROVIA, April 23 (LINA) – The Government of Liberia has described as a demonstration of respect for the rights of citizens and the rule of law, the formal charge of 20 persons arrested in connection with the recent violence in Paynesville by the Liberia National Police (LNP).

“Considering the law, government cannot hold anyone caught in violation of the law beyond the statutory period of 48 hours without being properly charged,” Deputy Information Minister Isaac W. Jackson said Thursday during the regular MICAT press briefing.

He noted that to formally charge the arrested individuals takes nothing away from the Special Independent Committee recently set up by the Justice Ministry but rather provides them the opportunity to have their case heard in a court of competent jurisdiction.

“It is saddening to have journalists who are supposed to properly inform our people to be the ones ill-informing them; we however understand now that some of our journalists do not understand what is obtaining at the LNP,” Jackson said.

According to Jackson, the LNP’s action is to prevent the violation of the rights of the arrested citizens, though caught in clear view violating the law.

It can be recalled that on Thursday, April 16, scores of angry motorcyclists stormed the Paynesville Community in protest at the alleged killing of one of their fellow motorcyclists, Mr. Alfred Tarnue, Jr, by a police officer.

The cyclists in their protest, set ablaze the Zone Five Police Depot in the Red-light Market, destroyed several others and physically assaulted several officers of the police.
