(LINA) -The European Union (EU) says it recognizes the progress made by Liberia regarding its respect for human rights and encourages the government to provide the necessary means to the Independent National Human Rights Commission (INHRC) to fully deliver on its mandate.

According to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs release, this requires the INHRC to implement the National Action Plan on Human Rights.

The EU also encourages the Government of Liberia to implement fully the Strategic Roadmap for National Healing, Peace-building and Reconciliation (the Reconciliation Roadmap).

During deliberations at the Third EU-Liberia Political Dialogue in Monrovia Tuesday, it was noted that the report prepared by Liberia to the UN Human Rights Council be considered on May 5 through the Universal Periodic Review mechanism.

Furthermore, the EU urged Liberia to make progress on important human rights issues, such as the abolition of the death penalty, reduction of gender and sexual- based violence, and enhanced access to justice.

The Government of Liberia is having a series of consultations with relevant stakeholders aimed at pushing for amendments to abolishing the death penalty, while taking into consideration its social context and judicial ramifications.

The Liberian Delegation was headed by Foreign Minister Augustine Ngafuan, while Ms. Tiina Intelmann, Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Liberia led the European side.

Others on the Liberian Delegation included Cllr. Benedict F. Sannoh, Minister of Justice, Cllr. Sarah M. Jegede-Toe, Acting Chairperson, National Elections Commission, Atty.
Boakai Dukuly, Acting Chairperson, Independent National Human Rights Commission and Thomas Kaydor, Deputy Minister of International Cooperation and Economic integration
