Delivering a special statement on behalf of government at a press conference in Monrovia Thursday, Information Minister Lewis G. Brown said the act of violence; looting and wanton destruction of properties of GVL by some Liberians will not go unpunished.
Minister Brown noted that the violence in Butaw does not only threaten the country’s peace and security, but it also undermines the collective livelihood of all Liberians and unfairly portrays the country as an unsafe destination for foreign investment.
“Together, we have all worked too hard to return our country to an enviable place for foreign and domestic investments in order to create much-needed jobs and improve the living conditions of our people and as such, we will effectively resist any effort by anyone or group to either alter our course or reverse our collective progress,” Brown stressed.
It can be recalled that on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, some angry protesters, armed with cutlasses and other deadly instruments, attacked the GVL mess hall and looted several items, causing other company workers to flee for safety.
The armed protesters also took hostage several people and injured others, including Mr. Varney Sirleaf, a senior member of the government and top official of the company.
