(LINA) –The Minister of Health-designate, Dr. Bernice Dahn, says the building of a vibrant health sector for Liberia cannot be overemphasized.

Speaking at a confirmation hearing conducted by the Senate Standing Committee on Health, Gender and Social Protection Friday in the chambers of the Liberian Senate, Dr. Dahn stressed that the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the country exposed the weakness of the Liberian health sector.
She therefore stressed the need to overhaul the country’s health sector to put it on par with those of other countries in the sub-region.

The minister-designate promised that when confirmed she will ensure that hospitals in the country are upgraded to tertiary level to enable them meet international standards and handle referral cases.

She named the hospitals as the JJ Dossen Memorial Hospital in Maryland County which will serve the southeastern region of Liberia, the Phebe Hospital in Suakoko Bong County toserve the central and northern regions while the Redemption Hospital in Monrovia will be relocated and upgraded to tertiary level to provide services that will transform it to referral level for residents of Montserrado County.
Dr. Dahn also called for the Act creating the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital to be repealed to enable the Ministry of Health have absolute authority over it and ensure that the institution returns to its pre-war status.

She then promised to advocate for budgetary increment for health workers in the country, saying that it would serve as a motivating force for them to perform better.
