MONROVIA, October 1 (LINA) - The National Elections Commission (NEC) Wednesday held a meeting with independent aspirants whose names appeared on the provisional list of candidates for the 2014 Special Senatorial Election.

The meeting was intended to brief the independent aspirants on the current state of the 2014 Special Senatorial Election.
During the meeting, NEC chairman Cllr. Jerome George Korkoya informed the aspirants that the Commission has written the President of Liberia and the Houses of Senate and Representatives recommending the postponement of the Special Senatorial Election.
The Special Senatorial Election is scheduled for October 14, 2014, but Chairman Korkoya says under the current circumstances, the commission cannot conduct a free, fair transparent and credible election, a NEC release said.
Chairman Korkoya said the Commission has been holding a series of consultations with authorities at the Legislature and there is a likelihood of conducting the Election any time before January 2015, in order to meet the constitutional date for the seating of senators to be elected.
Chairman Korkoya, however, said a decision on the postponement of the election is required to be made this week because the Elections Law of Liberia mandates the Commission to publish the list of all polling centers in the country 10 days prior to the conduct of any election.
He said following a pronouncement on the postponement of the election, the Commission will in consultation with stakeholders proceed with the process of setting up new dates for campaigning and other elections-related activities.
