The head of the LRA, Madam Elfreda Tamba terms the reports as total falsehood from the People, Spirit and the Nation newspapers, frowning at the media institutions for not adhering to the strictures of journalism.
“Journalism must be based on facts, not falsehood. My office is always opened for any inquiry,” said ElredaTamba.
Contrary to the newspapers’ report, Madam Tamba Thursday told reporters that the LRA was established on July 1, 2014 with a $13.1 million approved budget by the National Legislature but due to the Ebola outbreak in the country all activities were disrupted.
The three newspapers also reported that Madam Tamba and other Commissioners earn huge allowances and salaries, but the LRA boss said her salary and that the other commissioners were structured and approved by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
She added that commissioners at the LRA earn lesser salaries as compared to other government entities, though she did not mention names.
Madam Tamba continued that as LRA boss she earns a monthly salary of US$ 9,250.00 but her net salary after tax deduction is US$6,652.68 while the other commissioners make monthly salaries of US$7,000 and after tax deduction a net of US$6,500.00.
“I am telling you nothing but the truth. We have nothing here to hide” said the LRA boss.
On the issue of the workforce at the LRA, Madam Tamba indicated that employees at the LRA were all Liberian, and not foreigners as reported the newspapers.
According to the LRA boss her administration has worked out the necessary modalities to improve the welfare of its staff so as to minimize corruption at the entity.
She also stated that those staffs from the LRA that are assigned to the rural collectorates across the country are provided housing and transportation to beef up their work. Mrs. Tamba stated that the stories published do have any effect, but she is demanding from the papersa retraction of their publications.
“We have written the managers of the three papers and have taken up the issue with the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) and looking up to the Union for redress. However, if those papers don’t respond, our last resort will be to go to court and that we will not demand any other thing but retraction,” said Tamba.
