MONROVIA, June 14 (LINA) – Maryland County Representative Bhofal Chambers has vowed to ensure reconsideration of new fees for the registration of vehicles in the country.

The Ministry of Transport (MoT) will Monday, June 15, begin the collection of US$190 instead of US$170 for Taxi, some busses US$200 compared to US$250, transport pickup US$200 instead of US$230, among others.

In the view of Representative Chamders, the new fees, especially those increased are unacceptable and promised to ensure that they are reconsidered.

However, the Ministry’s Assistant Director of Public Affairs, Lemuel Kleeme, has said that the decision is in keeping with the motor vehicle policy and a result of a joint administrative resolution between the Ministries of Finance and Transport.
He added the new fees are also in keeping with section 21.10 of the consolidated tax amendment act of Liberia.

Kleeme noted that new fees are part of a strategy intended to create a shift in the service delivery of public transport to citizens.

He argued that the new registration fees are not strange as vehicle owners, transport unions have for couple of months being sensitized and the deadline set from May 15 to June 15 2015.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport says it has begun the distribution of new License Plates to vehicle owners who have completed their registration process with the ministry.
