According to the release, all countries are expected to make their contributions in advance of the Paris conference in order to enable EU negotiate an agreement for global action.
“If we are to stand a chance of keeping global warming within 2°C compared with preindustrial levels and avoiding catastrophe, an ambitious, legally binding agreement is going to be needed, covering all countries,” the release noted.
The release indicated that the risks of climate change are serious in that they unleash rising sea levels that threaten to flood coastal cities, increasingly extreme weather that jeopardizes food production and water shortages.
The release noted that climate change is not just happening to others elsewhere in the world, but to Liberia as well, causing misery and loss of human life as well as billions of US dollars worth of properties.
The release added: “This is the reason why the EU is currently working with Liberia and its Forestry Development Authority to end illegal logging and to make sure the forests are not destroyed.”
Meanwhile, the EU is expected to celebrate what it referred to as “European Climate Diplomacy Day” on Wednesday, June 17, geared towards promoting a common worldwide understanding of the need for action and to mitigate climate change, according to the release.
