Brown Wants Parents Use Education To Brighten Children’s Future

MONROVIA, June 25 (LINA) - Information Minister Lewis G. Brown has urged parents to positively impact their children’s lives by solidifying their educational foundation so that they can have a bright future.

Brown believes that for Liberia’s educational system to be improved in a manner and form that will present hope for a sustainable and brighter future for Liberian kids, a collective approach by all Liberians to clean the education system is required.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information regular press conference at the ministry Thursday, Brown implored Liberians to concentrate on the future of the nation by preparing the younger generation academically so that they will be prepared mentally for future leadership roles.

The minister’s statement comes amidst a pronouncement by the Ministry of Education (MOE) that the ongoing school calendar for all basic and secondary schools in the country will close on July 31, 2015, to reopen on September 7, 2015.

Brown said this measure by the MOE should not be seen as an attempt to hamper students’ learning process as has been perceived by some parents, but should rather be seen as a measure to afford students the opportunity to be strong academically.

“Some of the situations we are facing today did not happen yesterday or the day before yesterday; our society is paying for the years of deprivation, the years of not confronting the problems that existed,” Brown declared.

He cautioned Liberians to stop deceiving themselves by pretending that all is well with the education system, and work now to help improve the system rather than grieve over the measures taken by the MOE.

According to Brown, when some parents contemplate on the numerous opportunities that are coming to Liberia, they are concerned about the fact that their children are not in the position academically to inherit those opportunities.
