Dr. Stephen Kennedy disclosed that in order to fill the gap occasioned by the lack of competent medical professionals, the government through the Liberia Post-Graduate Medical Council will train students in disciplines that include Pediatrics, Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Addressing the Ministry of Information regular press conference at the ministry Thursday, Dr. Kennedy noted that the post-graduate medical specialty training program, which is the first-ever in Liberia, is aimed at providing professionals in the various disciplines over a 10-year period.

Kennedy noted that the overall goal of the training of more Liberian professionals is to strengthen, enhance and sustain quality urban and rural health services as well as provide a total of over 128 resident professional doctors.

He said this will enable Liberia to be on par with the rest of the world medically, as well as cater to the general population which is currently left unattended to as a result of the acute emergency and lack of doctors in the country.

Dr. Kennedy named the John F. Kennedy Medical Center and Redemption Hospital in Montserrado County as well as the Firestone Du Side Hospital in Margibi County and Phebe Hospital in Bong County, among others, as facilities to be used to train the students.

He said the government in partnership with the World Bank, Academic Consortium Combating Ebola in Liberia (ACCRL), UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), Baylor College of Medicine, and Chevron are providing support for the training program.
