MONROVIA, August13 (LINA) - River Gee County Senator Commany Wesseh has requested the holding of a special session of the Senate to observe the 12th anniversary of the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) on Monday, August 17.

On August 17, 2003, Liberian political parties, civil society, warring factions and other stakeholders signed the CPA which ended 14 years of civil war in the country.

In a communication to the plenary of the Liberian Senate Thursday, Senator Wesseh disclosed that the peace process was facilitated by ECOWAS, and assisted by the UN and United States, with former Nigerian Head of State General Abdulsalami A. Abubakar being principal mediator.

He said considering the historical importance of that singular event to the current peace that Liberians now enjoy, the government under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf organized an elaborate program to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the CPA on August 17, 2012 at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion.

He indicated that as elected representatives of the people of Liberia who are the net beneficiaries of the peace occasioned by the CPA, the Senate must never forget what has been achieved and the immeasurable possibilities of the future.
