MONROVIA, August 17 (LINA) - The Ministry of Education (MOE) has said investment in water and sanitation facilities in schools is important given the lessons learnt during the Ebola outbreak in the country.

“Girls are particularly negatively impacted by the lack of latrines in schools, especially when they reach puberty,” MOE noted in a nine-count priority document for the period 2015-2017, intended to improve the educational system.
In the document, the Ministry also stated that along with teachers, well-designed schools with adequate facilities are essential to improving the quality of education in the country.
According to the MOE, of the 4, 038 schools in the 2014 School Census, less than 40 percent of primary classrooms are solid structures, assuring that the government will exert all efforts to ensure that school infrastructure meets the needs of children, improve environment and retention in 2015-2017.
At the same time, the MOE has revealed plans to build 34 Basic Education Schools and a further 49 primary schools in the most populated school districts at an estimated cost of US$30.7 million.
The Education Ministry is currently holding consultations with stakeholders and the National Legislature in a bid to finalize its Priorities for 2015-2017 to improve the nation’s educational system.
