President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has concurred with the proposition of the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) calling for the reduction of the tenure of office

for the President and Vice President, senators and representatives.

The Liberian leader’s concurrence was contained in a communication sent by her to the Liberian Senate along with the full report from the Committee, which was read in plenary Tuesday.

“I concur with the CRC in the reduction of the presidential, vice presidential, senatorial and representative’s terms of office,” President Sirleaf said.

President Sirleaf, also in her communication did not concur nor reject a proposition of the CRC recommendation, which calls for traditional people owning their own lands and be a part of concessions agreements of said land—customary land right.

President Sirleaf said her action was based on the fact that there was already a proposed Land Rights Bill and the Community Forest Law currently before the Legislature.

President Sirleaf at the same time rejected a proposition calling for the rejection of dual citizenship and reiterated her quest for dual citizenship to be incorporated within the Constitution of Liberia.

She said that Liberia stood a great chance to benefit when the issue of dual citizenship was accepted.

“Evidence shown over the years that our nation stands to benefit economically and socially from the input of these persons of Liberian heritage into our common country,” she added.

President Sirleaf stated that many of the provisions of the alien and nationality statute enacted in 1972 were inconsistent with the Constitution and therefore invalid.

President Sirleaf asserted that research base on empirical status showed that countries that recognize dual citizenship have increased Diaspora remittances, more foreign direct investments, more gross capital formation and higher household consumptions.

“Study shows that countries that recognize dual citizenship have their diaspora population to transfer vital resources and skill to their countries of origin,” she stressed.

In March of this year the CRC at a conference held in Gbanga, Bong County approved series of propositions calling for amendment of the Constitution, among which was proposition 24 which calls for the Christianization of the state that the President has rejected.
