MONROVIA, August 26 (LINA) – Finance Minister Amara Konneh has pointed out that the economy of Liberia will not grow if the problems facing the country’s energy sector are not solved.

Minister Konneh made the statement Wednesday when he gave an overview of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) at a cabinet meeting presided over by Vice President Joseph Boakai in the C. Cecil Dennis Auditorium at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia.
Konneh noted that the MCC which started since 2008 has made significant strides in raising US$256.7 million to provide substantial support to Liberia’s energy and road maintenance programs as well as capacity-building efforts.

“We are building more roads than any other government ever in the history of Liberia, but if we do not maintain them they will definitely spoil soon,” the Finance Ministry boss indicated.
He observed that Liberia was able to meet and improve a threshold of 10 out of 20 indicators at various institutions of government, especially the corruption indicator which enabled the country to attract US$15 million in support to girls’ education, trade policy and land reform, specifically focusing on the Ministry of Lands Mines and Energy.
The MCC is a bilateral United States foreign aid agency established by the U.S. Congress in 2004, which is applying a new philosophy toward foreign aid.

As an independent agency separate from the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the MCC examines a country’s performance on 17 independent and transparency policy indicators before being made eligible to receive assistance.
