The River Gee Senator made the statement recently at the start of a one-day Retreat for the Revalidation of the LMP held at a local hotel in Monrovia.

Wesseh, who also chairs the Joint Legislative Modernization Committee (JLMC), said the retreat organized by the JLMC is the first step by his committee to ensure the revalidation of LMP by the National Legislature.

The retreat brought together Senators, Representatives and partners, including the Governance Commission, USAID and National Democratic Institute, to review the LMP for the Legislature to retake ownership as it had become dormant in the last couple of years.

Senator Wesseh also observed that the LMP will serve as a key tool to enhance law-making and the exercise of oversight by the National Legislature.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Governance Commission, Dr. Amos Sawyer, said the LMP will reenergize and win the re-commitment of the JLMC members to hold a roundtable conference on the modernization of the National Legislature to meet the needs and realities of the 21st century.

He said for the Legislature to be a better place, lawmakers should design strategies that would strengthen its role and responsibility in the governance process as well as ways in which legislations are made.

The LMP is a five-year modernization plan which was adopted by the 52nd Legislature to cover the period 2009 to 2013 aimed at making the Liberian Legislature 21st century compliant.
