MONROVIA, October 1 (LINA) –The Liberian Senate has cited the Ministries of Public Works, Finance and Development Planning and Transport to appear on October 8 to speak on the deplorable condition of roads leading to southeastern Liberia.

The Senate’s decision, which was reached at its 9th Day Extraordinary Sitting on Thursday, follows a communication written by Grand Kru County Senator Peter Coleman in which he decried the deplorable condition of roads leading to all of the southeastern counties.

In his letter, Coleman noted that the appalling condition of roads in the southeastern counties has plunged the region into a state of emergency and economic hardships which need to be addressed urgently.

Coleman explained that the region is not only being cut off gradually, but that the situation is also depriving the region of basics such as food, gasoline and other essential goods.

Coleman observed that due to the muddy and unstable state of the roads, vehicles are seen queuing up on the highway, something that leads to the perishing of goods being transported by commuters.

Although Coleman’s letter only petitioned the Senate to invite the Ministry of Public Works to address the emergency, Gbarpolu Senator Daniel Naatheen filed a motion that authorities of the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Finance and Development Planning also be made to appear before plenary as the situation constitutes a national emergency.
The motion was unanimously endorsed by plenary.
