“When that is done, the economy of the country will boom, resulting to peace and sustainable development,” Varpialh said.

He was speaking at the weekend at a program marking World Youth Democracy Day organized by the National Youth Movement for Transparent Elections in Gbarnga, Bong County.

Speaking on the theme: “Fostering Collaboration Between Civil Society and Political Parties for Peace and Sustainable Development in Liberia,” Varpilah challenged government, civil society and the private sector to strive to attain this goal.

He noted: “Without full collaboration amongst these three sectors, it is difficult to achieve peace, development and economic vibrancy.”

According to Varpilah, the primary roles of civil society are consciousness building and advocacy for citizens about local and national issues as a means of strengthening the governance system, while the role of the private sector is job creation and provision of employment opportunities through businesses.

The Global World Youth Democracy Day, which is celebrated on October 18 each year, aims to raise awareness about the positive contributions youth are making to promote democracy around the world, as well as to mobilize youth to participate in democracy-building discussions.
