SANNIQUELLIE, October 19 (LINA) – The Vice Principal of the St. Mary’s High School in Sanniquellie, Nimba County is calling on the Liberian Government and the African Union (AU) to erect an “AU Memorial Home” to commemorate the birth of the continental body in that part of the country.

In 1959 Presidents Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Sekou Tourè of Guinea and William V.S. Tubman of Liberia met in Sanniquellie for the first time as part of efforts to unify Africa and fight against colonialism.

That meeting eventually led to the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now African Union (AU), in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on May 25, 1963.

Jericho Dorwaziah, who is also the Co-Chair of the Municipal Council of Sanniquellie, told the Liberia News Agency Monday that the Memorial Home will serve as a reflection of the indelible role Nimba played in the formation of what is today the AU.

Dorwaziah argued that the birth place of the most formidable African solidarity promoter is being neglected for reasons unknown, adding, “Sanniquellie is weeping for an infrastructure that will bear the inscription of the entity she has given birth to.”

He said if the idea is accepted, it will not only serve as reminiscence to unborn generations, but also as a tourist attraction that will raise revenue for the government.
