NEC in September this year proposed the suspension of the election which was slated for October14 due to the Ebola outbreak in the country.

The National Legislature endorsed the proposal through a Joint Resolution approved by the President, in which the Commission was mandated to conduct the Special Senatorial Election not later than December 20, 2014.

In a letter addressed November 3 to the Upper and Lower Houses respectively, NEC also requested consideration of an alternative plan in its approval to defer the conduct of said election in a particular county where there is an upsurge of the Ebola virus during the election time.

NEC said the election in said affected county will be treated as by-election under Article 37 of the Constitution of Liberia.

The Commission further informed the Legislature that the Ebola factor has
triggered additional cost for the conduct of the election, which it will submit to the body shortly for approval.

Following the reading of the NEC communication, Plenary of the two Houses sent it to their respective committees to review and report back.
