MONROVIA, March 28 (LINA) - The Ministry of Information, Culture Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) Monday launched a five-day “World Heritage Workshop” in the Charles Gbeyon Conference Hall at the ministry.

The initiative is aimed at preparing Liberia’s tentative list of touristic sites to be considered for placement on the World Heritage list.

Liberia’s tourism sites that are being considered for the list are the Mount Nimba in Nimba County, Kpatawee Waterfall in Bong County, Lake Piso in Grand Cape Mount County and Providence Island in Montserrado.

The selection of the four sites followed a tour of several touristic sites across the country in October last year, after which the four tourism sites were accepted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to be worked on so that they can be used on the World Heritage Site.

Speaking at the start of the launch, Deputy Information Minister Andrew Tehmeh said Liberia stands a chance to benefit immensely from this venture and as such, the government will do all it can to ensure the success of this project by working with all stakeholders and providing the necessary support.

In remarks, Nimba County Superintendent Fong Zuagele said the local authorities will remain fully engaged in the process to ensure that Liberia is placed on the World Heritage Site list.

Superintendent Zuagele noted that the launch of the workshop is geared towards ensuring that Liberia is designated to be placed among other African countries on the World Heritage Site list and as such the people of Nimba are grateful to UNESCO for such an initiative.

Also in remarks at the program, Assistant Culture Minister Louise Macmillan lauded the management team that is preparing the documentation to be submitted to UNESCO to ensure Liberia is placed on the World Heritage List.

She named those on the team as Dr. Joseph Saye Guannu, Cultural Heritage Historian/Expert; Ahmadou Daniels, Natural Heritage Expert; Professor Jones Dopoe, Lake Piso Site Manager; Dr. Arthur Karnuan, Kpatawee Site Manager; Roger W. Luke, Mt. Nimba Site Manager; and Curtis R. Jarrett, Providence Island Site Manager.
