According to the Executive Director of the Association, Dr. Yasuhiro Yamamoto, the Japanese medical team, which he described as a proactive team as compared to others around the globe, is in Liberia to share knowledge with Liberian professionals on the control and prevention of infectious diseases, including Ebola.
He was speaking Wednesday at the head of a high-level delegation of the Japanese Association of Medical Logistics for Disaster which paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Marjon Kamara at her office in Monrovia.
Dr. Yamamoto stressed that their team will especially share technical ideas with Liberian health professionals using the Japanese ways and methods of handling emergency cases and managing disasters, emphasizing that Japan has a wealth of experience in disaster management.
The Japanese medical team visited the Liberia Institute of Biomedical Research (LIBR). On Thursday, April 7, and will visit the John F. Kennedy and Redemption Hospitals so as to locate a suitable site for the construction of the reference laboratory that would enhance the control and prevention of subsequent Ebola outbreaks in Liberia.
He said as part of their plan, the visiting team is expected to give support and back-up to logistics for medical care at the site when a wide scale disaster occurs in collaboration with Liberian medical personnel – doctors, nurses and other staff.
They will also coordinate with relevant parties on the dispatch of medical teams and supplies to emergency areas and secure and supply medical equipment, including drugs, and other supplies for medical care, as well as keep the site in a hygienic condition.
The Japanese team will provide training of Liberians in logistics management for medical care in disaster and carry on collection and analysis of data regarding logistics for medical care on the disaster for a next case.
Dr. Yamamoto used the occasion to thank Foreign Minister Kamara for the warm reception accorded his delegation and said his team was pleased to be in Liberia.
The team includes its Director, Ryo Chida and Advisor, Dr. Milanga Mwanatambwe, among others. Liberia’s Ambassador to Japan, Ms. Youngor Telewoda accompanied the
delegation to Liberia.
