He commended the Government and people of Liberia for their resilience and tenacity in defeating the Ebola Virus Disease.

He said Liberia has a success story and can be relied upon to share best practices with the region and the world in the prevention of conflict and the effective management of health crises.

Deputy Minister Giro gave the assurance Monday when his delegation held bilateral discussions with Vice President Joseph N. Boakai and delegation on the fringes of the ongoing World Humanitarian Summit organized by the United Nations in Istanbul, Turkey.

He reaffirmed the Italian Government’s commitment to the existing technical cooperation agreement between the two countries on support to the Dogliotti College of Medicine.

The Italian Deputy Foreign Minister disclosed that Italy is currently training several officers in advanced border protection as part of the preparation of Liberian security forces as the U. N. Mission in Liberia draws down.

Speaking during the bilateral talks, VP Boakai said trained doctors and healthcare professionals are indispensable in the drive to improve Liberia’s healthcare delivery system.

He noted that the A.M. Dogliotti College of Medicine must be strengthened and modernized to ensure that it continues to train doctors, pharmacists, and other health professionals not just for Liberia, but for the entire sub-region.

Vice President Boakai lauded the Italian Government for its financial, material, and manpower support in the creation and advancement of the medical college.

He called for greater technical cooperation and stronger ties between Italy and Liberia, according to a dispatch from Turkey.
