The hospital has been facing electricity problem since its two diesel generators encountered problem.
Medical Director Dr. Obed Dolo said the two generators with the capacity of 50KVA each broke down since Friday because the machines would no longer withstand the workload of the hospital.

Dr. Dolo said those who are currently admitted at the hospital with minor problems will continue to receive treatment until full recovery but that the center will not accept any pregnant woman or patient for now.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency Sunday in Gbarnga, Dr. Dolo said the hospital will need two 125KVA generators that will withstand the load of the hospital.

He said as the result of the shortage of electricity at the hospital, all cases have been referred to the Phebe Hospital, increasing the workload at that hospital.

“The C. B. Dunbar Maternity Hospital is the first obstetric hospital in rural Liberia with a catchment community of over 60,000 people benefitting from its services,” Dr. Dolo emphasized.

According to Dr. Dolo the hospital also caters to the health needs of patients with maternal complications from some border towns and villages within the Republic of Guinea.

Meanwhile, Dr. Dolo is appealing to the Government of Liberia, local and international partners, and people of goodwill to assist the hospital with generators with huge capacity to resume effective medical services to the citizens.

He noted that if nothing is quickly done to arrest the situation, it may lead to more maternal deaths in the next few days in the county.

Dr. Dolo explained that nurses are using flashlights to attend to the few post- delivery patients at the hospital, stressing that it is not healthy for a health system in this contemporary period.

He said the situation has been communicated to Ministry of Health but no immediate intervention has been made so far.

Speaking to journalists Monday, the Ministry of Health said it is exerting efforts to provide a new generator to the hospital.

In an interview with a local radio station in Gbarnga Monday, Ministry of Health Director of Communications Sobor George assured the public that electricity will be restored at the health facility in the days to come.

The C. B. Dunbar Maternity Hospital is a 50-bedroom facility.
