MONROVIA, June 20 (LINA) -The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Marcel Alain de Souza, has briefed President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on the status of an estimated 300 Community Development Projects earmarked for implementation by the regional economic bloc.

The projects are in the areas of transportation, healthcare, energy and agriculture, among others, with support from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Mr. De Souza also informed President Sirleaf about efforts to roll out the regional body’s Post-Ebola Recovery Plan under the chairmanship of the President of Togo and a major road project under ECOWAS Infrastructure Program that runs through Lagos and Dakar and into Kenya.

According to an Executive Mansion press release, Mr. de Souza made the disclosure at the weekend when he paid a courtesy call on President Sirleaf at her temporary office at the Foreign Ministry in Monrovia.

According to the release, Mr. de Souza was visiting Liberia to brief the Liberian leader on the activities of the ECOWAS Commission.
President Sirleaf was on June 4 elected ECOWAS Chairperson by white ballot at the 49th Ordinary Session of the Summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Dakar, the Senegalese capital.

She replaced Senegalese President Macky Sall and will serve for 12 months.

While in Liberia, De Souza will also meet Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, Foreign Minister Marjon V. Kamara, Finance and Development Planning Minister Boima Kamara, Health Ministry officials, African Ambassadors accredited near Monrovia, among others.

He will also visit and inspect ongoing works at the Mount Coffee Hydro and the White Plains Water Treatment Plant.

During his meeting with President Sirleaf, Mr. De Souza also briefed the Liberian leader about the activities of the ECOWAS Commission, discussed operational and procedural matters as well as matters particular to Liberia and ECOWAS.

He pledged to cooperate with President Sirleaf as the new Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, noting that the Commission will work with the President to move the regional body
forward.

De Souza also updated President Sirleaf on the various crisis situations in the region, including Guinea Bissau, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria and reiterated the regional body’s resolve and commitment towards finding lasting settlements to these crises.
He committed the Commission to sustaining the fight against terrorism in the region and pledged to work with President Sirleaf and her colleagues to achieve this goal.
