“I pledge in whatever way I can in consultation with the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS to ensure that the Commission carries out the jobs it wishes to, especially in cross-border movement, trade and health, among others,” President Sirleaf stressed.
The Liberian leader made the pledge to ECOWAS Commission President Marcel Alain de Souza at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia at the weekend when he led a delegation from the Commission to pay her an official visit.
President Sirleaf thanked the ECOWAS Commission and the entire West African regional body through de Souza for its assistance in the fight against the Ebola virus which ravaged Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, bringing to the ground their fragile economies.
President Sirleaf was on June 4 elected ECOWAS Chairperson by white ballot at the 49th Ordinary Session of the Summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Dakar, the Senegalese capital.
Upon her ascendency to the position, President Sirleaf immediately set out key priorities aimed at peace consolidation, security architecture, conclusion of negotiations and legal actions, the transformation of Vision 2020 and the improvement in financial stability.
She replaced Senegalese President Macky Sall whose tenure ended after he took over from Ghana's President John Mahama in 2015.
Her tenure will run for the next 12 months.
