Mr. Scheel, a German politician, was a member of the Free Democratic Party of Germany.
He first served in government as Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development from 1961 to 1966. He led his party from 1968 to 1974.
Born in Solingen, Germany on July 8, 1919, Mr. Scheel served as President of Germany from 1974 to 1979 and before then served as Vice-Chancellor of Germany from 1969 to 1974.
He died in Bad Krozingen, Germany on August 24.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, President Sirleaf, on behalf of Liberia, extended heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the family, loved ones of the deceased and the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Germany for the irreparable loss sustained.
In the message to the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Joachim Gauck, the Liberian leader said she has learned with deep sorrow the death of Mr. Scheel who, she noted, will be remembered as an outstanding politician, businessman, devoted statesman and a prominent architect of the east-west détente who was influential in shaping the course of Germany’s post-war politics.
The Liberian President said the late former Vice-Chancellor will also be remembered as a devoted and passionate negotiator and one of the pioneers of Germany’s Ostopolitik policy which sought to reconcile Germany and Europe.
She further indicated that the late Scheel enunciated admirable policies that significantly contributed to the growing political and economic unity in Europe.
President Sirleaf added that as a towering and dedicated figure, the late German President served his country and people in various capacities with pride and distinction.
“The whole of humanity was profoundly affected by the great work of Mr. Scheel. He will truly be missed not only in Germany, but the world over, particularly, for the reunification of Germany and his contribution to global politics,” the Liberian leader stressed.
