Explaining her ordeal to our reporter over the weekend in Tienii, Grand Cape Mountb County, little Christina Mekemel said she was beaten severely and tortured by her own sister and two other individuals for allegedly been a witchcraft on Wednesday September 7, 2016.
little Christina explain in tears that ‘Uncle Swallo (Washington Swallo) burned me. He says I am in witch because his daughter had sore on her foot so he said I was responsible for the cut. One girl (Telmon) had a dream and according to her she saw me putting the little girl’s foot into a fire in her sleep. The next morning she informed the people in the yard that I am a witch.’
“Uncle Swallo asked me in the morning and I told him I am not the one who put the sore on his daughter foot. His daughter that small baby. He got vex, took me in the empty room tied my foot, put cloth in my mouth, tear the empty rubber bucket into pieces, light it with matches and drop in on my hand,” little Christina said as she wept during the horrify interview with our reporter.
According to her, what was more surprising was that during the incident, other neighbors were laughing and embracing her torturer (Swallo) as her elder sister Kou Mekemel held her mouth tightly to prevent her from screaming.
She said in tears her hope to seeking refuge got lost as she witnessed her biological sister (Kou) kicking and stepping in her stomach in a violent mood.
“Aunty Kou was stepping-stepping all in my stomach, beating me with stick. She call uncle Swallo and say I was making witch with his daughter. The person who was holding my mouth, that Aunty Kou, the person who I was living with.
Meanwhile, little Christina has since rejected her involvement into witchcraft activities as been alleged, adding I swear uncle (the reporter), I am not in witch. I don’t know about any witch business.
Little Christina was sent by her parents who are said to be residing in Nimba County to come and stay with another family member in Grand Cape Mount County for the purpose of acquiring solid urban education few years ago but since her arrival, that dream is yet to be actualized as she is yet to start school.
Also speaking, the new caretaker of little Christina, Melvin B. Kamara said he left his house early that morning and upon his return, his wife informed him that little Christina was burned for allegedly been a witch.
He said after the incident, Christina’s torturous tied up her hand with cloth so as to conceive the incident and warned her never to explain the situation to anybody.
“I saw little Christina walking on the road to purchase bleu water (sore) medicine grieving, so I asked her and she said nothing. I walked to her and remove the cloth from her hand and all I could see was this, (her burnt hand). I asked her who did it but she refused to say so I immediately walked in the yard and begun asking questions,” he said.
He said at that point he became very angry and took little Christina to the Commissioner’s House where the matter was reported to the police, resulting to the arrest of Kou and madam Bekeh Swallo, wife of Washington Swallo.
Upon the arrest of the two individuals who assisted Washington to tortured little Christina, Washington immediately fled but with the intervention of community members he was arrested from his hideouts and turned over to the police for prosecution.
Kamara said following the arrest of Washington, the two women were officially charged with criminal facilitation, aggravated assaults among others and transferred to Roberts Sport for prosecution.
“Christina is not my family member but after the incident, Christina informed the police and local officials that she was afraid of living in the same house where she was tortured so I agreed to take her in and find a doctor to treat her,” he said.
At the same time, Kamara is calling on the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to come to the aid of little Christina. At present he said he has three biological children as well as ten other children from extended family who are currently living with him as such called on government to help with Christina’s medication and schooling.
