MONROVIA, December 31 (LINA) - National Elections Commission (NEC) chairman Jerome Korkoya has urged politicians and party leaders to get involved with the electoral process to understand the rules and regulations governing elections in Liberia.

He pointed out that political leaders are charged with the responsibility to inform their partisans about issues relating to the electoral process and not to make statements to undermine the credibility of the commission.

Korkoya stressed that to enhance the democratic process in Liberia, it will require the full participation of all registered political parties in all activities of the electoral process, noting that responsibilities of the 2017 elections should not be left with the NEC alone.

Korkoya made the statement Thursday during the certification of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) as a registered coalition to participate in the 2017 general and presidential elections.

The certification ceremony was held in the James M. Fromayan Conference Hall at the Headquarters of the NEC in Sinkor.

The CDC consists of three registered political parties: the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), headed by Senator George Weah, the National Patriotic Party (NPP) headed by Senator Jewel Howard Taylor and the Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP) headed by Representative Alex Tyler.

Korkoya cautioned registered political parties to desist from early campaign activities, especially the erection of billboards bearing the photos of political leaders and logos, among others.

He said setting up billboards with politicians’ photos or other logos prior to the official declaration of campaign activities by the NEC runs contrary to the elections regulations.
