The opening session of the Legislature, which was held simultaneously in the chambers of the House of Representative and the Senate, was graced by members of the Liberian cabinet and the diplomatic corps as well as civil society organizations, among others.
Following the hosting of the separate sessions, members of the legislature converged in the rotunda of the capitol where a reception to mark the formal opening of the session of the legislature was convened.
Making special remarks at the reception, Vice President Joseph Boakai lauded members of the 53rd Legislature for their dedication to duty exhibited during the 5th session, especially during the extraordinary session.
He reminded members of the legislature that 2017 is a very critical year and as such they must continue to work together to ensure that they achieve the overall objectives of the government.
VP Boakai then urged them to remain strong and united as the nation sails through the critical period, adding, "In unity success is sure and I have no doubt that Liberia will march successfully."
Also making remarks, House Speaker Emmanuel Nuquay emphasized that as the legislature convenes, the pillar of his leadership is geared towards ensuring a holistic functioning of the government so that the country can remain on the trajectory of peace.
Nuquay stressed that the need to maintain Liberia's peace and the hosting of a successful election is contingent upon cooperation of all citizens and the three branches of government.
For his part, Senate Pro-Tempore, Armah Jallah called on Liberians to ensure that Liberia has a very peaceful transition of power by conducting themselves peacefully during the elections period.
He commended members of the legislature for their efforts and the sacrifices they made especially in 2016 to put forth the nation's developmental agenda.
53rd Legislature Commences Final Sitting

Article 32(a) of the Liberian Constitution states that: "The Legislature shall assemble in regular session once a year on the second working Monday in January."
