MONROVIA, January 16 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says the celebration of ECOWAS Human Rights Day is a demonstration of the authorities’ renewed dedication and commitment to the principles of the economic bloc.

Madam Sirleaf named the principles as democracy, good governance, respect for human rights and rule of law.

The Liberian leader made the statement Monday at a program marking the maiden celebration of the ECOWAS Human Rights Day held at the Monrovia City Hall.

She explained that these principles are part of the ECOWAS Vision 2020 intended to create a borderless, peaceful, prosperous and cohesive region based on good governance.

She stated that the ECOWAS Vision 2020 will ensure that people have the capacity to access and harness enormous resources through the creation of opportunities for sustainable development and environmental preservation.

President Sirleaf emphasized that the 2017 celebration seeks to strengthen the foundation in the region for improved efforts to enhance the promotion and protection of the rights for ordinary community citizens.

The celebration, which was held under the theme: “Promoting and Protecting Women’s Rights Towards the Attainment of ECOWAS Vision 2020,” was organized by the Independent National Commission on Human Rights of Liberia.
