According to Finance Minister Boima Kamara, the current tax roll of structures and land that are currently attracting taxes is unacceptably low, and stressed the need for the extension of coverage so that more tax payers are brought into the tax net.
The Finance Minister made the statement Monday at the official launch of the Real Estate Community Partnership Project held at the Monrovia City Hall.
He asserted that there is also a compelling need for a robust block mopping exercise that will not only be limited to Monrovia and its immediate environs, but a process that will cover the length and breadth of the country.
He reiterated that the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning stands ready to provide whatever support that is necessary and can be allowed within the confines of the budget to support the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) in ensuring that the tax base relative to real estate is expanded.
Minister Kamara stressed that compliance and enforcement must also accompany whatever expansion program is put in place, noting that when laws are passed but are not enforced, it defeats the purpose.
He indicated that an essential hallmark of tax administration is enforcement and that if Liberia’s objective of domestic resource mobilization is to be achieved, good laws must be put in place to enforce and regulate them.
