Bowier Wants Law Giving Women Equal Participation In Politics
25 August 2016, 5:02 pm Written by Micat LiberiaMONROVIA, August 24 (LINA) - Former Information Minster Emmanuel Z. Bowier has called on the National Legislature to enact the legislation for equal participation and representation of women in the political processes of the country.
“If we cannot pass this law now that we have a female president, when will we do so?” he asked in his keynote address at the 169th Flag Day celebration at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion in Monrovia Wednesday.
Bowier recalled that the granting of voting rights to women by the Tubman administration in 1944 paved the way for many Liberian women to participate in political processes, including Angie Brooks, who rose to the presidency of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
He stressed the need for men to change their mentality about their female counterpart by recognizing their rights to gender equity.
“The persistent denial of women the right to equitable participation is bad as it is holding back the progress of our nation,” Bowier emphasized.
According to Rev. Bowier, women have long fought for gender equity which, he noted, men have refused to recognize over the years.
Meanwhile, Rev. Bowier is calling on citizens to help transform the situation in the country for the good of all, rather than merely criticizing the works of others.
The 169th Flag Day anniversary was held under the theme: "Patriotism and Self-discipline, The Way Forward for National Transformation.”
