Two police officers have being
incarcerated at the Monrovia Central Prison pending trial on charges
of theft and misapplication of L$2,893,500 entrusted to them by the
Liberia National Police.
Dee David Henry and Timothy Papie Mator were arrested on January 22
for allegedly cashing a check for the amount at the Central Bank of
Liberia (CBL) on December 4, 2014 and absconding with the money,
according to the Liberia News Agency.
According to a police charge sheet, Deputy Police Director for
Administration, William K. Mulbah, explained that on Thursday,
December 4, 2014 he and ACP Varney A. Sheriff processed a check of
L$2,893,500 in Henry’s name and gave it to the officers to cash at the
CBL for police operation.
Mulbah said after cashing the check, the two officers changed the
money to US$31,000 and converted it to their personal use.
However, the two officers, according to the police charge sheet,
denied any wrongdoing during preliminary investigation, saying the
money was stolen from them while en route from Gurley Street to the
police headquarters.
Meanwhile, Maitor and Henry are being detained at the Central Prison
pending trial.
