TUBMANBURG, August 28 (LINA) – Radio Bomi, the only community radio station in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, has been gutted by fire.
Fire gutted the radio station early Tuesday morning, according to the Liberia News Agency correspondent in the county.
The Station Manager Zinnah Cassell said the fire, which started in the station’s broadcast studio at about 2:00 a.m., destroyed its US$125,000 transmission equipment along with the news and production departments.
Cassell told reporters in Tubmanburg Wednesday that the National Security Agency and the National Fire Service are jointly investigating the cause of the fire.
He said it was difficult for the management of the station to say how soon the station will resume operations, adding, “it is a setback to the dissemination of the Ebola virus preventive messages.”
The station broadcasts to residents of Gbarpolu, Grand Cape Mount, and Bomi counties.
Radio Bomi was constructed by UNMIL under its Quick Impact Project in 2010 in Tubmanburg, and has since experienced a number of setbacks, including a lightning strike on May 22, 2014 that partly crippled the facility.
