MONROVIA, Sept 3 (LINA) – A local citizen-based movement has described as “hypocritical and baseless” a call by some Liberians for President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Vice President Joseph Boakai to resign.
The North Central Alliance (NCA) said it believes that the call is not only illegal, but also has the propensity to disrupt the nation’s flourishing democracy and undermine efforts by government and international partners to combat the deadly Ebola virus.
Making the statement in an interview with the Liberia News Agency Tuesday, the National President of NCA, Attorney J. Allison Barco, said his institution believes that the Unity Party-led Government has not breached the Constitution that warrants the resignation of the government.
Barco pointed out that while it agrees that all is not 100 percent right, such decision is counter-productive to the growth of the economy and will stall the government’s fight against the Ebola epidemic and prolong the isolation of the country.
He said any party wanting state power should do so in line with the rule of law and good governance by preparing itself to participate in the general and presidential elections in 2017, but not at a time when the government is busy addressing an issue of serious national concern.
According to Barco, his organization has vowed to mobilize its supporters from Lofa, Bong, Gbarpolu, Nimba and Margibi Counties to resist any attempt by any Liberian to usher in an interim government.
